Studio Hire:
Inclusions & Add-Ons

Selecting a studio to act as the location for your production can be overwhelming. If you are an experienced producer with a clear vision you are looking for a partner who can elevate your production and get on board quickly. If you are a first timer you want to know that you are working with a safe pair of hands. If you are anywhere in between you want a studio that can meet your needs without compromising your vision.

If you are a production company looking for a venue, a marketing professional looking for a partner, or a content creator looking to achieve something you can’t on your own, you need to know how we stack up against the alternatives.

Here, we break down our standard hire inclusions as part of our dry hire option, and available add-ons and packages, to help you make the right choice.

We want to minimise the surprises with transparent pricing and clear features so that you can focus on your project without distractions.

TLDR - Main Studio inclusions vs add-ons (Melbourne)

  • The Sound Stage is a production ready blank canvas with exceptional ready to go features.
  • You can add additional support personnel or operators to your booking at any time.
  • As your production expands, so do we, so we can support you at any time.

What is included in our Main Studio HIRE?

The Sound Stage is our marquee video studio.

Designed from the ground up for broadcast quality video production, it boasts a five meter (5m) ceiling clearance, and a generous floor area that enables multi-setup productions so that you are not constantly having to tear down and setup for alternate shots.

The interior walls of the studio are black, an ideal backdrop for simple shoots and a blank canvas for your own production design.

The studio itself is double-walled with an air gap and clad in two layers of 16mm Fyrchek plaster on each side, effectively creating a room within a room. The studio doors are custom made with added density and lined with Code 6 sheet lead, hung in solid oak frames and fitted with acoustic seals.

Generally, this has provided exceptional sound proofing for our clients, but if you have a particularly sound sensitive project please let us know as we may be able to take additional steps to manage the building and surroundings.

We are fully setup with 32A three-phase power with 20A dedicated circuits for safe power distribution. This supports setting up your own equipment to bring your vision to life exactly as you planned it. We also are configured with dedicated fibre 250/250Mbps internet.

Access to the space itself is through our step free roller door as well as standard doors for talent and client access. We have space for clients to gather and monitor production as well as a green room or talent to prepare for on camera work.

Additional facilities include a kitchenette, accessible bathrooms, and two parking spaces for use with bookings.

All of these base capabilities are part of the dry hire arrangement and designed to reduce your setup time, improve shoot consistency and quality, and lower the risks for your production.

Additional add-ons and tailored support while using our studio space

Our primary studio, known as The Sound Stage, is designed to run as a very capable dry-hire studio for clients who know what they want to build and execute. However, we also offer a range of additional support services (such as creative, technical or client specific requirements) to make the production more unique. We understand that every production is different. Some teams arrive with a full crew, trucks, equipment - while others prefer to leverage our in-house services.

As such, we’ve opted to create a range of optional services that you can add to your booking. These are not actually pre-set packages as such, but more so a range of building blocks that help you expand or contract your production as required, while not overcomplicating the dry-hire of the studio itself.

Bespoke lighting, lighting grid, LED wall and paper rolls

The studio has a range of preconfigured lighting setups (with a dozen or so rigged lights that meet most requirements). Our lighting grid has been optimised to work with our LED wall (more on that in a second), to provide a quick and easy way to bring productions to life with unique lighting and backdrop capabilities.

Many of our clients want to take advantage of our state of the art, high resolution P2.0 LED video wall. At 8.9m wide (when flat) and 2.56m tall, it can operate at 4480 x 1280 resolution running at 60p.

All of this technology is great, but what it means for your production is that you can run dynamic images and/or video for your backdrop. This can achieve both a better visual on the fly with minimal processing for a natural look, as well as a better experience for on-camera talent so they can see the details in the backdrop when compared to working with green screen technology.

You can easily load in your media from a USB drive, or take the LED wall to the next level with HDMI connectivity, zoom meeting connections, game console connections, and more.

Our LED wall package also provides paper rolls for setup of alternative shots separate to the main stage area so that you can have multiple simultaneous setups. This is ideal for capturing things like talking heads reactions in the same booking session without the need to tear down and setup from scratch. Additionally, there is a blank canvas near the paper rolls for alternative shooting space, useful for designing your own sets or additional production design.

On-demand crew support steeped in strong industry experience

Some productions come to us with a crew already in place. Other productions require additional support, or full end-to-end support - both of which Humdinger can provide. Our technicians, camera operators, sound specialists and set designers can help you extend your vision within the space, particularly when working with the LED wall or studio lighting, along with complex camera configurations.

We’ve done it all, and love to help.

Having a technician familiar with the studio can assist in removing friction during setup and shooting; whether it be small lighting adjustments, experience in using the space or ideas around how to execute the idea in alternative ways. Also when required, we can provide additional crew members such as camera operators, lighting technicians, sound recordists and more. Whether you are trying to do a simple interview setup or a broadcast style production, our goal is to assist with optimal setup and conditions to make the production smooth.

Our crew members are able to integrate into your existing team rather than replacing it, which keeps you and your team in creative control while leveraging many hands to make lighter work.

Access to additional gear for better creative output and technical options

While our main studio is designed to accommodate you, your crew and your own gear, some of our clients choose to supplement their kit with the range of gear available on-demand at Humdinger.

Whether you need access to cameras, tripods, lenses, audio solutions or additional fixtures within the space, our range of gear covers a lot of commonly requested items to make your production run smoothly.

We specialise in multicam production, so we often provide full camera kits along with studio hires to save the hassle of renting and building matched cameras.

If your production involves presenters, panellists or remote contributors - additional microphones or IFB systems can streamline the production and improve communication.

Like all add-ons, these items can be added selectively to enhance production value without committing to all of the equipment at the outset of the booking. Items such as teleprompter set up, confidence monitors, 17ft camera crane, staging, seats for a live audience and more.

Customising the set and other scenic elements to craft the perfect story

One of the biggest strengths of The Sound Stage is that it is neutral. It is a controlled, distraction-free environment that is like a blank canvas with pre-rigged elements to make production smooth. The space can evolve significantly in a matter of hours depending on the production’s needs. And if you want to create a distinct visual identity, we can connect you to our production designers and set builders to make the vision come to life.

Custom furnishings and set pieces takes the dry-hire studio space to another level of production quality, while still benefiting from the controlled lighting and optimal acoustics.

Our approach to customisation is collaborative and helps you either enhance an existing vision or build one from scratch. Again, the goal is to optimise the output while reducing complexity and cost.

Access to additional rooms for collaboration behind the camera

We understand that productions usually have a number of stakeholders. Agencies, marketing teams, brand teams, production specialists, executives, talent and more. This is why we have numerous spaces like our rehearsal room, meeting room and greenroom to allow organisation of these teams without interference with the studio production.

These spaces are often used for script reviews, wardrobe prep, live monitoring of the production or simply a place for stakeholders to keep working while production is underway.

We find that providing separation between production and decision-making (stakeholders) is critical while also allowing for collaborative closeness and proximity to the shoot itself.

Live production and streaming simplified

More and more we are seeing productions looking to do live productions and streaming. Clients require live switching, streaming and multi-camera recording and Humdinger have taken industry-lead in providing exceptional live production services.

Our studio workflow and live production environment is considered best-in-class and utilised by some of the biggest brands and corporates in Australia, including Mastercard, Netflix and Carsales.

Often we utilise the space to capture individual camera feeds for later editing, while simultaneously delivering live streaming in real time. This could be to support internal corporate broadcasts, product launches or hybrid events.

Using our controlled studio production environment we can deliver broadcast-level outputs while reducing complexity and cost.

Post production and delivery to end the story perfectly

Studio hire, with or without add-ons is only one stage of the production process. If you are wanting additional help in post-production, our editing and delivery services can help. Whether it be colour grading, editing, captioning or assisting with multi-format exports - our team of post-production specialists can help bring your story to life.

This is to ensure consistency between what is captured on set and the final product. Additionally, you may require assistance with delivering multiple aspect ratios, compliance standards or preparing unique versions to meet the requirements of each channel.
