Backdrops, sets and customisation of our video studio
One of Humdinger’s biggest strengths is how easily the studio can be reshaped to suit different creative directions. Instead of locking crews into a single preset look or fixed orientation, the space supports LED-wall environments, traditional backdrops, physical sets and multi-zone shooting; all within the same room. This flexibility is a core reason Melbourne production teams gravitate toward Humdinger for multi-purpose shoot days.
Ready-to-go backdrops
Humdinger offers several backdrop options that can be deployed quickly without major setup time or cost.
These include:
- The LED wall; the premium option for digital environments, motion graphics, scenic plates and branded looks
- Paper rolls; available for white, colour, and chroma green setups
- A clean black wall; ideal for silhouette lighting, moody interviews, stylised looks or product isolation
Because these backdrops are already integrated into the space, crews can move between them quickly; often without a full teardown.
Using paper rolls for stills, portraits and green screen
Paper roll setups are simple but incredibly versatile.
Typical uses include:
- Profile shots and talking heads needing a clean, flat look
- Portrait stills captured between video takes
- Green screen for lightweight compositing
- Product photography when paired with controlled lighting
The rig we have setup allows for multiple paper options (thus giving you the ability to change background colours). This gives you and your crew additional flexibility and creativity; whether it is filming B-roll, capturing secondary assets or just simply using the space for your video shoot.
Bringing your own physical sets
The studio has enough floor space and ceiling height to accommodate:
- Custom-built sets
- Modular walls and flats
- Furniture, props and staging
- Brand activations or stylised environments
Teams frequently bring in their own décor or structural elements to complement LED-wall visuals or replace them entirely. The roller-door load-in and spacious floor plan make set builds straightforward for carpenters, stylists and art departments.
Ceiling suspension and effects
Humdinger supports creative concepts that extend beyond the floor. The steel-beam structure above allows for:
- Suspending performers
- Hanging props or set pieces
- Rigging lightweight effects
- Dynamic music-video setups
This capability is uncommon in studios of this size and gives directors additional options for stylised sequences or special effects.
Multi-setup workflows in one room
One of the most practical advantages of Humdinger’s studio is the ability to run multiple looks simultaneously.
A common flow is:
- LED wall for the main scene
- Paper roll for talking heads or stills
- Black wall for stylised or hero shots
This layout lets crews move talent between setups rapidly. You can shoot a show, pull aside the host for a few clean talking-heads, and then grab BTS and stills; all without changing rooms or resetting the main set.
This efficiency saves:
- Time
- Crew fatigue
- Client hours
- Equipment rental costs
It also makes the studio ideal for content batches, social cutdowns, talent-based campaigns and multi-format brand shoots.
Why the space is truly customisable
Humdinger’s studio isn’t just an empty room; it’s a purpose-designed production environment with:
- A flexible lighting grid
- Soundproof construction
- LED wall integration
- Safe rigging infrastructure
- Open floor area
- Fast load-in
- Separate spaces for clients and rehearsals (if required)
Having all of this production space has proved invaluable for our many clients who have utilised the space for director meetings, on-set producers, brand team and more to leverage the space while in-production.
Audio, control room and live production
Humdinger’s video studio is custom-built by a team of video production experts with years of experience. We essentially built our own dream factory, so that it was flexible and able to handle the needs of even the most seasoned video production crews.
Professional audio system
The studio includes a full PA and audio workflow designed for clarity, consistency and easy integration with your production setup.
Key components include:
- Yamaha DXR15 mkII speakers for clean, high-output audio
- DXS15 mkII subwoofer for music, performance and playback
- Yamaha DM3 Dante mixer for low-latency routing and digital patching
- Playback PC for plates, cues, music, sound effects and monitoring
This infrastructure supports:
- Live music
- Corporate presentations
- Podcasts and talk shows
- Audience-based events
- Multi-camera productions that require real-time sound
The system is clean, reliable and configured to minimise setup time.
Control room and multi-camera workflow
The control room is one of the studio’s most powerful features. It allows crews to switch, monitor and manage productions without cluttering the main floor.
What the control room enables
The space supports:
- Multi-camera switching
- ISO recording of all cameras
- Live streaming and webcast setups
- Director and producer monitoring
- Audio mixing and talkback
- Playback of LED wall content
For larger productions, the control room allows agency teams, clients and technical crew to operate behind glass while the studio floor stays focused on talent and performance.
Ideal use cases
The control room is especially useful for:
- Panel discussions
- Video podcasts
- Live corporate events
- Music performances
- Hybrid events with both in-room and online audiences
- Multi-angle interviews
- Scripted content that needs live approval
It transforms the studio from a shooting space into a full broadcast-ready environment.
Facilities and client comfort
Smooth production days depend on far more than the shooting floor. Humdinger’s supporting facilities ensure talent, crew and clients all have dedicated areas to prepare, rest, review and manage the day without interrupting the main set.
Green room, makeup and wardrobe
Located beside the main studio, the green room provides:
- A comfortable space for talent to relax
- Makeup and grooming stations
- Wardrobe preparation space
- A quiet area for resets and downtime
This keeps the studio floor clear and prevents crowding during lighting changes or technical adjustments.
Kitchenette and catering support
The kitchenette includes:
- Coffee and tea facilities
- Fridge and basic storage
- Space for catering drop-offs
It’s designed to keep teams fed and organised throughout long shoot days.
Bathrooms and accessibility
Facilities include:
- Two accessible bathrooms; one disability access and one ambulant.
- Step-free access throughout the ground floor
This makes the space easy to navigate for all crew and talent.
Additional bookable rooms
Upstairs rooms offer extra space for:
- Rehearsals
- Breakout areas
- Additional makeup or wardrobe
- Agency and stakeholder meetings
- Quiet work zones during production
These spaces are frequently used on larger shoots where multiple teams need to operate simultaneously.
Access, load-in and parking
The studio is designed around efficient movement; before, during and after the shoot; and this makes a noticeable difference to the overall production experience.
Easy load-in
The roller door opens directly into the studio. This allows crews to:
- Park a van or small truck at the entrance
- Move gear straight onto the studio floor
- No tight stairways when loading props!
This helps to reduce the load in and load out time; or ‘bump-in’ and ‘bump-out’ for those of you in the industry!
Vehicle, truck and van size considerations
While most production gear fits easily, extremely large vehicles or oversized items may require discussion; the roller-door width allows for big items to enter, however consideration must be applied to then getting the item through the studio door (which is smaller). These are all simple things we can show you in person.
Parking
Humdinger provides:
- Limited on-site parking in Brunswick, Melbourne
- Ample street parking nearby (again in Brunswick, Melbourne)
Productions with larger crews generally find this arrangement workable, especially with staggered call times.
HVAC, comfort and the on-the-day experience
Humdinger was designed so that talent, clients and crew can work without distraction, overheating, noise issues or downtime; a major advantage for anyone looking for reliable video studio hire Melbourne options.
Climate control
Good news, we have air conditioning and heating. You and your team will be comfortable here!
You can:
- Maintain a stable temperature for talent
- Keep equipment cool
- Run the system on low fan speeds to minimise noise
- Avoid the “warehouse heat problem” common in generic venues
For most productions, the system is quiet enough to run during takes. For ultra-sensitive audio setups, it can be dialled back or temporarily paused.
A comfortable environment for talent and clients
Because productions often involve long hours on set, the studio is structured so that:
- Talent can rest comfortably between takes
- Crew have room to work without overheating
- Clients and agency teams can observe without crowding
We have purpose built the main studio and surrounding rooms to be comfortable and reduce delays, to increase smoother takes with less down time.
Safety, insurance and compliance
Humdinger takes a practical and professional approach to safety. The studio is designed for safe movement, clean power distribution and compliant working practices without unnecessary red tape.
Public liability requirements
When you bring your own crew (often referred to as “dry hire”) - we ask that you have your own public liability insurance to protect you, your production and us as your hosts.
- If Humdinger’s team is running the production, our insurance applies
- For external productions, the hirer is responsible for coverage
- The booking agreement allows hirers to attach or confirm a certificate of currency
This ensures clarity and avoids any confusion regarding responsibility.
Test and tag - equipment responsibility
Most safety issues arise from equipment brought onto set. For this reason:
- Your own gear should be safely maintained
- Any highly specialised rigs, suspension or unusual equipment should be discussed in advance
- Humdinger can provide guidance on safe layout and cable management if needed
The studio’s infrastructure; including lighting grid, power, access points and rigging; is already designed to minimise risks.
Working at height and rigging
The ceiling beams can support:
- Performer suspension
- Lightweight rigs
- Hanging props or set pieces
Crews must follow standard rigging safety protocols. Humdinger can advise on what is viable within the space.
Inductions
Formal site inductions are not required for most hires, keeping bump-in simple. If a production has specific internal safety procedures, the studio team is happy to work with them.
Studio tours and what to expect
Seeing the space in person is often the moment when producers, directors and agency teams realise how versatile it really is. For anyone considering video studio hire Melbourne, Humdinger offers an open-door approach to tours and recces.
Walk-throughs for planning
During a studio tour, you’ll typically be shown:
- The main studio floor
- The LED wall in action, including sample backgrounds
- The lighting grid and default lighting setups
- The green room, makeup spaces and kitchenette
- The control room and multi-camera workflow
- Upstairs rehearsal or meeting rooms
- The load-in area via the roller door
The idea is to help you visualise your shoot, identify opportunities, and understand how multiple setups can run within the same space.
Creative guidance during the visit
Humdinger’s team will often:
- Show examples of past productions
- Demonstrate LED-wall environments
- Suggest efficient layout options
- Talk through lighting possibilities
- Flag any considerations for sound, power or rigging
- Help you plan a multi-setup schedule for the day
This ensures you leave with a clear, practical picture of how to maximise the space.

Booking terms, availability and pricing structure
At Humdinger, we aim to keep the booking terms and process super simple, regardless of how you intend to use the video studio space.
How far in advance do you need to book?
The studio’s schedule varies. Some weeks book out completely; other weeks have openings available at short notice.
General guidance:
- 1–2 weeks’ notice is ideal for most bookings
- Same-week bookings are possible if the calendar allows
- Earlier enquiries help when technicians, multi-camera crew or additional services are required
If you’re planning a larger production or need multiple spaces, earlier is always better.
Deposits, payments and paperwork
To confirm a booking:
- We ask for a 50% deposit upfront
- Balance to be paid 2 days prior to the hire
- We use a basic hire agreement and confirmation you hold insurance (if not using ours)
The deposit secures your booking and locks in your schedule.
Cancellation policy
Because studio availability is limited and often booked in blocks, cancellations follow a tiered structure:
- More than two business days out: usually no fee, aside from a discretionary admin fee
- Two to one business days out: 50% fee
- Within one business day: 75% fee
The structure protects the studio from late cancellations while remaining fair to production schedules.
What’s included vs add-ons
The base hire rate includes:
- The main studio
- Lighting grid
- Basic lighting setup
- Access to paper roll backdrops
- Use of the LED wall (depending on package)
- Standard power and studio facilities
Add-ons can include:
- Technicians
- Gaffers or lighting assistants
- Additional lighting
- Set builds or repainting
- Multi-camera crew
- Extra spaces such as the rehearsal or meeting rooms
- Weekend or after-hours rates
Speak to us about “add-ons” as they vary by project. We usually work with you on your needs rather than offering a strict “menu”.
What you can and can’t do in the video studio space
Humdinger supports a wide range of creative ideas, but like any professional studio, there are sensible boundaries to ensure safety and protect equipment.
Allowed; with standard care
Most productions can safely use:
- Haze/smoke machines
- Atmospheric effects
- Suspended performers or rigs, pending discussion
- Music and live performance
- Paper confetti or lightweight materials, with appropriate cleanup time
- Multiple lighting zones
- Digital environments via the LED wall
These elements are commonly used in music videos, brand films, product shoots and podcasts.
Requiring prior discussion
Some activities require checking in with the team before shoot day:
- Large quantities of water
- Heavy-set pieces that may challenge load-in dimensions
- Vehicles; the studio limits what can enter
- Pyrotechnics, flames or high-heat elements
- Any rigging beyond lightweight or standard performer suspension
The team can almost always suggest safe alternatives or workable adjustments.
Cleaning and reset expectations
Crews should leave the space in reasonable condition; the team will handle:
- Resetting the LED wall
- Putting away standard fixtures
- Light cleaning
If you have to use the space for something requiring significant clean up (confetti, paint, large objects) then we can discuss about adding extra cleaning services as required.
Examples of how our video studio is utilised
The studio’s size, lighting grid, LED wall, soundproofing and workflow-driven layout make it suitable for almost any style of production.
Common shoot types
Humdinger frequently hosts:
- Branded content; interviews, CEO messages, product explainers
- Video podcasts; single or multi-camera
- Music videos; LED backdrops, moving heads, haze and effects
- Corporate videos; talking heads, case studies, training videos
- Panel shows and discussion-based programs
- Live music recording
- Stills photography using paper rolls
- Hybrid events with an in-room audience and livestream
If it fits through the roller door and doesn’t breach safety guidelines, it can likely be filmed here.
Multi-setup production days
One of the studio’s great advantages is how efficiently crews can capture different formats in one session. A typical day might include:
- A primary LED-wall interview
- Talking-heads on paper roll
- Social cutdowns captured on the black wall
- BTS and stills in parallel
- A quick livestream or client presentation from the control room
This efficiency is a major reason many brands book the studio for “content sprints”.
Flexible creative examples
Past productions have used the studio for:
- Music videos with full LED animations
- Corporate announcements with fast backdrop changes
- Podcasts filmed with branded environments
- Product launches with in-room audiences
- High-energy performance shoots with moving lights and haze
The space is versatile enough to handle both simple and high-production-value setups.
Getting more value from your studio day
When productions invest in video studio hire Melbourne, they often want to maximise the output from the time and crew they’ve assembled. Humdinger’s layout makes it easy to generate more content than originally planned.
Capture extra assets while the studio is lit
Crews often grab additional:
- Behind-the-scenes photos
- Short social clips
- Talking-head cutdowns
- Ad reads
- Portraits on paper roll
- Product detail shots
- Evergreen brand statements
These add-ons cost almost nothing extra but dramatically increase the value of the shoot.
Use multiple zones strategically
Because the LED wall, paper roll area and black wall can all be set at once, you can:
- Move talent quickly between setups
- Capture variations in lighting
- Produce both hero content and support content in one day
- Avoid the need for extra locations or additional hire days
This is especially useful for campaign-based content, multi-episode shoots, or any situation involving time-poor talent.
Make use of the control room
The control room allows:
- Real-time review of takes
- Live editing or switching
- Faster approvals from clients on-site
- Live streaming or hybrid events
This can save hours in the edit later.
Studio hire vs full production service
Remember; we are very flexible! You can hire the video studio on its own, or alternatively you can leverage our in-house production team if extra support is useful.
Dry hire
Best when:
- You already have your own crew
- You’re running a simple setup
- You prefer to manage lighting, cameras and sound independently
Dry hire gives you access to the space. You can always opt to amalgamate your dry hire studio booking with assets of ours (such as LED wall, additional lighting, etc). These assets will incur additional cost in most instances.
Studio + technical support
Ideal when you want:
- Assistance with the LED wall
- Lighting support
- A smoother workflow without overstaffing
- Reliable technical oversight
A technician can help operate lighting, playback and LED-wall content throughout the day.
Full production
Humdinger’s production team can handle:
- Creative direction
- Script, storyboard and pre-production
- Filming
- Multi-camera setups
- Lighting design
- Audio
- Edit, colour and delivery
The Humdinger team knows the studio intimately, so if you are looking for faster turnaround and end-to-end production services to expedite your production - we are here to help!
